Six places that sell a safari, and none of them mean the same thing by it.
Red dunes an hour from a shopping mall, the Serengeti in migration month, a leopard park you enter at half five, elephant herds on the road to Kruger. Six bases, and the best day out from each.
A desert safari is four hours, and only about forty minutes of it is driving.
Deflate the tyres, twenty minutes of dune bashing, a photo stop on a ridge, then the camp: camels, sandboarding, henna, a grill and a show. Book the camp you want to sit in, because that is where the evening actually happens.
Three things people get wrong about booking a safari.
The questions that arrive after the money has gone: how rough the dunes really are, whether a shared vehicle costs you the sighting, and what a park fee adds to the ticket price.
Dune bashing is a fairground ride
Drivers deflate the tyres and take the slip faces sideways on purpose. Children and anyone who reads in cars will feel it. Ask for the vehicle without the ride, or sit in the middle row and look at the horizon.
Six strangers, or your own bench
A shared game drive means eight people and one radio, and the vehicle leaves the sighting when the group is done. Private buys you the time to sit still, which is the whole skill of a game drive.
Park entry is often extra
Yala, Udawalawe, Kruger and the Tanzanian parks charge their own entry on top of the vehicle. Some operators fold it in and some do not, so read what the price covers before you compare two of them.
Big Five, elephant herds and the parks that reliably deliver them.
Lion and buffalo are the easy ones, leopard and rhino are the reason people go back. Addo has elephants by the hundred, Pilanesberg is malaria-free and a morning from Johannesburg, Udawalawe puts a herd on the track most afternoons.

The safari calendar decides more than the operator does.
Game viewing is a dry-season sport: thin bush, animals pinned to the water. The Mara crossings run July to October, the Serengeti calving is February, Yala shuts for roughly a month around September, and the Arctic snowmobile season only exists from December to April. In the Gulf it inverts, and June to August is the month to avoid.
A safari is either the price of a taxi or the price of a flight.

The basket lifts before the sun and drifts wherever the morning wind goes, low enough to see a herd break and run, high enough to watch the plain curve away. Leopards in Yala Block One
Yala holds one of the densest leopard populations on earth, and block one is where they are. Jeeps queue at the gate before dawn for the first hour, which is the hour that matters. Elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles fill the rest of it, and the good drivers park, switch off and wait rather than chase the radio.

A snowmobile safari under the aurora
Lapland borrowed the word and made it mean something else: a machine each, a frozen river, a forest track and a fire in a lavvu halfway round.
